International School
Jakarta International School (JIS) is a private, international
school in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was established in 1951 for expatriate
students living in Jakarta and is the largest international primary and
secondary school in Indonesia. JIS has
2,400 students aged 3 to 18 from about 60 nationalities. The school adheres to
North American and other curriculum models from pre-kindergarten through grade
12. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the
Council of International Schools. The United States Department of State reports
the curriculum offered at Jakarta International School as "has a strong
international focus", and considers it one of the best schools overseas
for preparing students for American university entrance. JIS has three
campuses, two solely for Elementary students in Pattimura and Pondok Indah, and
one much bigger and considered the main campus for junior high and high school students
in Cilandak, South Jakarta.
With
five original students, Jakarta International School was founded by UN workers
in 1951. These pioneers introduced relevant schooling in English for children
of expats in the newfound Republic of Indonesia. From early days the school's
international identity was clear. It was originally named the Joint Embassy
School (J.E.S.) after its British, American, Australian and (then) Yugoslavian
embassy partners. Just over a decade later, in 1978, J.E.S. became J.I.S. Today,
with high expectations for standards based, results oriented, engaged learning
and a culture where students seek personal excellence in every
pursuit, JIS helps each community member become their best to be best for the world. As JIS continues its over 60-year
journey, we value each decade and each learner whose personal story betters our
own. With 2400 students, over 250 faculty and countless alumni and parents
contributing daily to the school's legacy and the world around us, we can only
be encouraged, humbled and motivated to keep learning together for the sake of
our students' borderless future.
In its seventh decade, JIS is known
the world over as an accomplished school, one that has weathered many storms
and emerged as a positive, multicultural, and innovative learning
environment. The school's
hunger for continuous improvement reflects the optimistic and entrepreneurial
nature of its Indonesian host nation. While Indonesia's young democracy is
striving to establish itself on the global stage, JIS is a mature school that
is hoping to maintain its vitality by asking fundamental questions about its
mission and vision.
On the
human side, we have an outstanding faculty, dedicated staff, bright and
hard-working students, supportive parents and alumni, a visionary Board, and a
strong leadership team. Our physical plant is a well-endowed, amply resourced,
tropical haven in the heart of Jakarta. These are the elements needed for
creative contemplation of a visionary school.
With knowledge expanding exponentially and technological access to that
knowledge morphing daily, schools are reassessing their essential structures
and roles. Recent brain research has converted some hunches into certainties,
while throwing some challenging questions to educators the world over. In
short, we are learning about how students learn best. Some forms of learning
are almost universally effective, and some need to be tailored to individuals'
unique styles. We must
therefore convert our schools, perhaps fundamentally, to allow for new and
appropriate methodologies of learning.
